We will answer the questions you have and maybe even some you didn't think of. There are many solutions for cycling, swimming, scuba-diving, football, (Gaelic Games, soccer and rugby), as well as golf, badminton, squash, kayaking and gardening. Have a look at these photos to see some of the possibilities and read the section below for a little information on eyewear for various pursuits.
Cycling

If you enjoy cycling you may or may not need glasses to see clearly. Either way you will want to protect your eyes from wind, flies, dust & UV light. We can provide eyewear that is light, impact resistant and allows good peripheral vision. If you do need to wear glasses your prescription could be incorporated into your protective eyewear. You might not want to have the prescription incorporated in this way and may prefer to wear contact lenses instead, wearing your cycling shields over these. Even if you have been told in the past that you are not suitable for contact lenses, this may no longer be the case as continuous advances may have answered your needs.
Prescription Diving Masks

If SCUBA diving is your hobby and you are having difficulty seeing underwater or in the boat, there are solutions for you. Barry Lawler has been a keen diver for many years and this gives him a detailed insight into your requirements. Prescription lenses can be bonded onto the inside of the faceplate of your diving mask. The position and type of lens that is bonded will be tailored to your individual needs dependent on, not only your vision, but on the configuration of your diving equipment. You may need a correction for near viewing only, to enable you to see your gauges you may need it for distance only but not for your gauges or you may need it for both. The set-up of the visual correction will vary depending on the circumstances. Call us in Barry Lawler Opticians in Naas and Leixlip, Co. Kildare to see what you need.

For those who enjoy swimming, not being able to wear glasses can be frustrating, and contact lenses and water are not always the best combination. Being able to see where you are going yourself, being able to watch what is happening around you, and possibly
wanting to make sure your children are also safe and nearby are some of the important tasks you might be finding difficult without the help of your glasses. This problem can be easily solved by having your prescription incorporated into swimming goggles. At Barry Lawler Opticians, we supply swimming goggles that are suitable to have the spectacle prescription incorporated in this way. This can make your time swimming in the pool or open water a far more pleasant and safe experience.
Football, Squash, Kayaking

We have sports goggles of various designs which have you prescription incorporated. There are a number of factors which have to be considered including, safety standards functionality and comfort. Whether your sport is football, squash, badminton or any of the many possibilities, at Barry Lawler Opticians we will advise you on what best suits your needs.
Golf

Whether your difficulty is seeing the ball, your scorecard, the fairway, flag or anything else we will advise you on the options available. Of course your difficulty with golf may not be related to your vision, but we will do as much as we can and the rest is up to you. Special tints can be incorporated into eyewear to improve contrast and visual comfort. Protection from Ultra Violet light to reduce the chances of cataracts and macular degeneration is important for people who like to spend a lot of time outdoors.
People who use varifocals can find them difficult to use on the golf course. There are special designs of varifocals designed to make things easier. There is also the possibility of contact lenses. Ask us to help you.
Gardening

Gardening may not be considered a hazardous pursuit and yet every summer we have people attend us with eye injuries sustained in the gardens. They may have received a corneal abrasion from a tree-branch or being hit in the eye with a stone set flying by a lawn-mower blade. Some of these injuries may be minor irritants, some may have longer term consequences. There are also issues such as exposure to Ultra Violet light and the susceptibility to cataract and macular degeneration that it causes.
Ask us about the steps you can take to protect your eyes and enjoy your hobby. You may only need advice on precautions to take or you may need protective eyewear. Better to find out before the injury occurs.
